LTA 157: September 2026

After the relatively quiet last few months of the summer, September was a big month for Apple news. The shows starts with a few followups to previously covered stories, just one regulatory story, a few updates on Apple-related legal cases, and two HR-related stories. Then we take a quick look at Apple’s services and original content, before moving on to the main stories. The first has gone rather under the radar, a whole new Apple Maps API for auto-makers, the second is the biggest story of the month, the new hardware from the ‘Surprise and Shine’ event, and the third is the release of the 27 versions of Apple’s many OSes. The show finished with a quick look at a few other Apple-related stories that made the new in September.

1 — MapKit for Automotive

  • Apple and Ford Partner to bring Apple Maps integration into Ford’s own software for their up-coming Fathom electric truck — 📣 Apple PR & www.macobserver.com/…
  • Ford are first, and seem to have helped with the design, but Apple have released this as a whole new API other automotive companies can adopt
  • Allows vehicles and Apple Maps to share richer, largely EV-specific, data than regular MapKit:
    • Weather & elevation data to help improve range estimates
    • Charge stop, battery status & preconditioning information to help optimise charging
  • Replaces neither traditional CarPlay, nor CarPlay Ultra
  • Alan Clarke, Ford’s VP of Advanced Vehicle Projects explained that Apple made a more compelling offer than their competitors, including Google
  • “Ford is not bringing CarPlay Ultra to the Fathom. Apple Maps will instead run natively through Ford’s own in-car platform, while standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will remain available. That means drivers will still be able to use Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and other compatible navigation apps through CarPlay while also having Apple Maps built directly into the vehicle.” — The Mac Observer
